8 Effective Upper Body Strength Workouts for Seniors
Upper body strength helps with daily tasks like carrying groceries and getting up from the floor. Use light dumbbells, water bottles or no weight at all to start.
The exercises
Aim for 1–2 sets of 8–12 slow repetitions. Choose a weight you can lift with good form.
- Wall push-up
- Seated or standing biceps curl
- Overhead press (seated, only if shoulders allow)
- Seated row with a band or towel
- Lateral raise to shoulder height
- Triceps extension or chair dip with hand support
- Farmer's carry — walk short distances holding light weights
- Front raise to shoulder height
Making progress
When 12 repetitions feel easy, add a little weight or another set. Increase slowly over weeks, not days.
Safety first
- • Talk with your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you have a heart, lung, joint or balance condition.
- • Stop and seek help if you feel chest pain, dizziness, unusual shortness of breath, or sharp pain.
- • Move within a comfortable range. Mild effort is expected; pain is not.
- • If you have a shoulder injury, skip overhead movements unless a clinician clears them.
