Gentle options

  • Brisk or easy walking
  • Stationary cycling at a light pace
  • Water walking or swimming
  • Seated marching
  • Light resistance band rows
  • Sit-to-stand
  • Wall push-ups
  • Heel raises
  • Gentle stretching
  • Slow breathing practice

Tips

  • Keep breathing steady. Avoid holding your breath while lifting.
  • Warm up and cool down for a few minutes.
  • Stand up slowly. Some blood pressure medicines can cause dizziness or lightheadedness, particularly when changing position.

Safety first

  • • Talk with your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you have a heart, lung, joint or balance condition.
  • • Stop and seek help if you feel chest pain, dizziness, unusual shortness of breath, or sharp pain.
  • • Move within a comfortable range. Mild effort is expected; pain is not.
  • • Ask your doctor what activity level is safe for your blood pressure and medicines before you start.
  • • If your blood pressure is very high or uncontrolled, ask your healthcare professional whether exercise is appropriate before starting or continuing an exercise program.
